How popular are remote jobs among professionals of different age groups? Check out the post below to see what the data finds.
Younger professionals are more keen on remote working compared to their senior peers, according to LinkedIn Economic Graph data. Sample this: Out of all applications submitted by 20-24 year olds in India, 21% were to remote positions as of April 13 this year. In 2021, this figure stood at just over 12%. For professionals in the age group of 35 and above, only 16.4% of overall applications were for remote roles.
The endorsement from the information technology sector is one factor which has boosted this trend. According to Kamal Karanth, co-founder of specialist staffing firm Xpheno, the IT Services industry alone has hired and onboarded a little under a million freshers in remote mode since the pandemic struck. For those graduating from college or in the early years of their careers, there is a method and proof of the doability and efficacy of the remote work model. And hence the reason to continue with it is strong.
“While senior peers do have the reference of what work-from-office is, it is also their undoing. The senior peers’ hunt for the ‘normalcy’ of office work is a distraction that younger talent does not deal with,” Karanth adds.
Remote working suits best for individual contributor roles, who do not need to come together with fellow team mates to put down a plan of project, review together, negotiate on the best approach, impart knowledge to fellow team mates, learn from team mates, collaborate for something big objectives and so on.
Fresh out of college graduates, if start working remotely, they will never know what team work is in a corporate set up. There are lots of aspects and traits which new graduates need to learn on the floor, for a better team culture tomorrow.
Having said all this, technically competent individuals can always deliver what is needed for a product/service working from anywhere. Companies and individuals need to weigh on all aspects than just thinking about the possibility and feasibility of working from the comfort of their homes.
